Cognitive Load
The mental effort required to use an interface.
Cognitive load is the amount of thinking a user has to do to understand and operate an interface. Every extra choice, unclear label, or inconsistent pattern adds load; too much of it causes errors and abandonment.
Good design reduces cognitive load through clear hierarchy, sensible defaults, progressive disclosure, and familiar patterns — letting users focus on their goal, not the interface.
