What a CMMC consultant does

A CMMC consultant gets you ready for an assessment. Most are Registered Provider Organizations (RPOs), registered with the Cyber AB to deliver CMMC consulting. They define your assessment scope, run a gap assessment against the 110 NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2 requirements, write the System Security Plan and plan remediation. An RPO cannot certify you: only a C3PAO can.

How many there are

Secureframe counted 387 RPOs in March 2026 (Secureframe); the Cyber AB Marketplace has the live list. This directory lists 16 so far, each linked to the page its credential came from.

How to choose a CMMC consultant

  • Registered? Check the firm on the Cyber AB Marketplace.
  • Done it before? Ask for Level 2 readiness work at companies your size, and a reference.
  • Scoped in writing? A fixed price for a defined scope beats an open hourly retainer.
  • Assessor-grade evidence? Drafts and working papers don’t count in an assessment (32 CFR 170.24); the consultant should leave you with final documents.
  • No promises of certification. Walk away from anyone who guarantees a pass.

Questions people ask

What is an RPO in CMMC?

A Registered Provider Organization: a company registered with the Cyber AB to deliver CMMC consulting, such as scoping, gap assessments and remediation planning. An RPO cannot certify you.

Do I need a CMMC consultant?

Not always. If your team knows NIST SP 800-171 and has time, you can prepare in-house. Many small defense contractors hire an RPO for scoping, the gap assessment and the System Security Plan.

How much does a CMMC consultant cost?

It depends on scope and how much remediation you need. Most firms quote per project after a scoping call; get at least two written quotes for the same scope.

How many RPOs are there?

Secureframe counted 387 Registered Provider Organizations in March 2026. The Cyber AB Marketplace has the live list.

What is the difference between an RPO and a C3PAO?

An RPO helps you prepare. A C3PAO is the authorized assessor that conducts the Level 2 certification assessment. Only a C3PAO can certify you at Level 2.
