Quick answer
Cursor is an AI code editor, best when you want to watch and steer every change inline, with autocomplete and a choice of models. Claude Code is an agent that runs in your terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser, best for long multi-file tasks and automation. Since 12 October 2026, Claude models in Cursor cost extra on top of the $30 Premium plan, while Claude Code is included from $20 a month.
Cursor and Claude Code both write code for you, but they start from opposite ends. Cursor is an editor with an agent built in: you work in its window, accept or reject diffs, and lean on autocomplete as you type. Claude Code is an agent first: you describe the job and it reads the codebase, edits files, runs commands and opens pull requests, from the terminal or inside VS Code, JetBrains, the Claude desktop app or the browser.
Pricing changed this week. On 12 October 2026 Cursor's plans were folded into the X Subscription, shared with Grok and X Premium. The $8 Plus tier only runs Grok models, and Claude and GPT models now start at the $30 Premium tier, billed separately at API list prices. Every price below was checked on cursor.com/pricing and claude.com/pricing on 16 October 2026.

Choose Cursor if…
- You want to see and approve every change inside an editor
- Fast autocomplete matters as much as the agent
- You want to switch between Grok, GPT, Gemini and Claude models
- The $8 Plus plan with Grok models covers what you need
Choose Claude Code if…
- Claude is the model you want, without paying API rates on top
- You hand over whole tasks: a feature, a refactor, a test suite
- You want to run it in CI, on a schedule or from Slack
- You already work in VS Code or JetBrains and don't want to switch editors
The honest verdict
If you want an editor that makes you faster line by line, pick Cursor. If you want an agent you can hand a whole task to, pick Claude Code. The October 2026 pricing change decides the close calls: if Claude is your main model, Claude Pro at $20 a month now costs less than Cursor Premium at $30 plus Claude usage at API rates.
You don't have to choose only one. The Claude Code extension installs in Cursor as well as VS Code, so you can keep Cursor's autocomplete and run Claude Code in the side panel. I build client products with both. Whatever produced the prototype, the work that gets it to production stays the same: auth, data, security, tests and a deploy someone else can repeat.
Common questions
Cursor vs Claude Code, answered
Neither wins outright. Cursor is better for working inside an editor with autocomplete and inline diffs. Claude Code is better for handing over whole tasks, scripting and CI. If you mainly use Claude models, Claude Code is now the cheaper way to get them.
